VBS: A Valuable Lesson, A Valuable Ministry

This is a big month in the life of the church.  Each year, we take time as a congregation to reach out to the community through Vacation Bible School.  This is a difficult ministry that takes weeks for us to prepare.  And it is a ministry that can easily be viewed as one with little or no return on our efforts.  There is a good chance that we will not see an increase in our weekly Sunday attendance after VBS.  Hopefully, as a church we understand that there is so much more value to this ministry than more people in the pews.

I hope that each of you is already praying for the kids God will send to our church, as well as the many volunteers who are planning to serve.

This year’s theme is, “Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus.”  I am very excited about the bible stories we will be teaching this year.  Each bible point emphasizes that “Jesus Rescues” us.  What a great message to give to young people today who need Jesus.

Monday’s lesson is taken from Luke 15, the parables about lost things.  The key verse is, “The Lord will hold me close. (Psalm 27:10)

Tuesday’s lesson is from Luke 10:38-42: Martha worries and complains.  The key verse is, “The Lord comes to rescue each time.” (Psalm 34:19)

Wednesday, the kids will learn that when you struggle…Jesus rescues!  The bible story is of Jesus’ friends trying to rescue him in the garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:39-54; Matthew 26:36-56).  The key verse for this day is, “Be still and know that I am God!”  (Psalm 46:10)

On Thursday, kids will learn that Jesus loves them when they do wrong, and that He loves them so much that He rescues them.  They will hear the story of the criminal on the cross.  The key verse is, “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.  But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

On Friday, the bible story is from Acts 3:1-26: Peter and John heal a lame man in Jesus’ name.  The key verse is, “This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead.” (Ephesians 1:19-20)

Some of the kids who come to VBS will be hearing these stories for the first time.  Some of them will come from a difficult home life.  We have a wonderful opportunity to minister to them, to love them, and to point them to Jesus.  There is great value in that!  I remember how much that meant to me when I was young.

Your prayers are an important part of VBS.  Please pray for this  ministry daily throughout the coming weeks.

To those of you who have volunteered to help, thank you!  Your time is valuable, and we are so grateful for your willingness to serve.

See you at the church!
