"It takes a village to raise a child."

African Proverb

“It Takes a Village…”

“There is an African proverb that says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This proverb became well known in 1996 when the First Lady of the United States, Hilary Clinton, used it in the title of her book, It Takes a Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us. In this compelling book, Mrs. Clinton presents her vision for the children of America. She focuses on the impact individuals and groups outside the family have, for better or worse, on a child’s well-being, and advocates a society which meets all of a child’s needs.

I have not read the book, but I often thought of this quote during the years Nick and I were trying to raise our children — sometimes on our own, and sometimes with the help and support of family, teachers and friends.  We needed a team.

The same principle of working together as a community and being one-minded in raising our children also applies to the effectiveness of the ministries in the church. The ministries to which God has called us cannot be accomplished through the efforts of one person. Not even if that person is the pastor. It takes all of us together, seeking God’s direction and using the gifts and the talents He has given us, to be the church.

This month, the nominating committee will be meeting to pray together and seek God’s direction in the process of selecting elders, deacons, and trustees to serve on the 2015 Administrative Council of the Yocumtown Church of God.

The voting council is made up of four elders, eight deacons, one trustee, and one youth representative. There will be vacancies in each of the positions at the end of 2014.

Please be in prayer for the nominating committee throughout this process.  Pray that those who are asked to serve, and are called by God, are willing to say “yes” to the committee. If you are approached by the committee to serve, please prayerfully consider your calling and respond as He leads you.

Please continue to pray for the leadership of the Yocumtown Church of God as we continue to seek His direction and serve Him faithfully.
