"God has given us the Disciplines of the spiritual life as a means of receiving his grace. The Disciplines allow us to place ourselves before God so that he can transform us."

Richard Foster

Spiritual Discipline

If you have been watching TV recently, I’m sure you have seen more than one weight loss commercial over the past few weeks. Some encourage you to run out and purchase a gym membership. Others promote diet pills and diet plans, and some include all the food you need to eat for a month. These commercials usually display before and after photos of someone who claims to have successfully shed a few pounds in the span of only 30 days. I think this market is capitalizing on the New Year’s resolutions so many people make and plan to keep. While good health is a positive goal, I think it is important that we work on our entire being – body, mind and soul – and incorporate healthy habits that will help us to grow spiritually .

For the next few months, we are going to study, together, 12 spiritual disciplines. In his book, Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth, Richard Foster says, “God has given us the Disciplines of the spiritual life as a means of receiving his grace. The Disciplines allow us to place ourselves before God so that he can transform us.”

Romans 12:1-2 says, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

These disciplines, or habits, will include meditation, prayer, fasting, study, simplicity, solitude, submission, service, confession, worship, guidance, and celebration.

Join us on Sunday mornings to see what God’s word has to say about these disciplines and why they are a better health plan than a diet or gym membership.
