More Than Just a Building

How do you define the Church?  Is it just a building?  A house of worship?  Or is it so much more?  I hope you know it is so much more.

Last week, I was in bed with the flu.  The high temperature, body aches, coughing, flat on your back for days flu.  I went to the doctor to have him listen to my chest to make sure no infection had set in, but what I really wanted him to do was to tell me I wasn’t contagious and give me permission to go to church.

It certainly wasn’t the building  I was missing.  It was all of you.  You are the church!  I look forward to seeing each of you and to the time we spend together on Sunday mornings.  I look forward to seeing all the ladies who come to share life together every Tuesday and to seeing all the teens who show up Wednesday evening.  And I didn’t want to miss Youth Sunday!  I was grateful that I didn’t have to worry about who would lead the service in my absence, but I wanted to be a part of what was happening here.  I knew the teens would do a great job leading worship, and I was excited to be a witness to what God is doing in their lives.  Social media is a wonderful thing, and my iPad (and my husband) made it possible for me to watch what happening.  I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining or ungrateful, but it wasn’t the same as being here.  Something was missing.

Church isn’t a building we come to once or twice a week.  Church isn’t a service we come to observe.  Church is relationships and celebrating life and love, a support system and an accountability group; it’s teaching and learning and growing; it’s witnessing His miracles, building on our faith together, praising God and preparing our hearts and minds for whatever is happening in the world around us.  Church is loving God and loving people.

That’s what I missed!  That’s what I so love being a part of.  And when I’m not connected to it, I notice something is missing.

If Church is not these things for you, then you are missing something.  Unfortunately, you might not even realize what it is you are missing.  Satan loves when the only thing Church is to us is a building, and worship is just something we come to observe.

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.  And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.”  – Corinthians 12:27-28

Each one of you has been called to be the Church, and the Church doesn’t have an age limit.  What is God calling you to do?  Together, let’s make sure the church is more than just a building.
