“Jesus, All I Want for Christmas is You.”

There is a popular Christmas song out by Mariah Carey called, “All I Want for Christmas is You.”  It’s got a good beat, she has a great voice, and the song plays frequently on the radio and Pandora.  As I listened to her sing it this morning, I thought about how much this song misses the true meaning of Christmas.  The words seem to be so good in the beginning, but as the song continues, it expresses her only desire for Christmas is a man.  “All I Want for Christmas” is a great love song, but maybe it’s not such a great Christmas song.

The lyrics did make me think and wonder.  What if we desired to have Jesus as much as she desires to have her man?  What if the only thing we asked for this Christmas was more Jesus… for the entire world to know Him —  and not just to know His name — but to know Him with their whole hearts?  Maybe we should be singing this song to Him.

“I don’t want a lot for Christmas.  There is just one thing I need.  I don’t care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree.  I just want you for my own — more than you could ever know.  Make my wish come true.  Oh, all I want for Christmas is you.

I don’t want a lot for Christmas.  There is just on thing I need, and I don’t care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree.  I don’t need to hang my stocking there upon the fireplace.  Santa Claus won’t make me happy with a toy on Christmas day.

I just want you for my own — more than you could ever know.  Make my wish come true.  All I want for Christmas is you.” — Lyrics by Mariah Carey

I know we aren’t going to change the entire world in one night.  But what if we lived our lives in a way that reflected the words to this popular song?  He is the only thing we need.  Our lives should be a reflection of what He has done for us.  “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” (Colossians 2:8)

Let’s make this our prayer this Christmas:  Jesus, all I want for Christmas is You.
