"A Lifestyle of Worship" by Dave Nicola
I would like to share some thoughts on Worship of our God through song. I am thankful for the many teachers I have come across during my times spent being a part of a Worship Ministry and the books I have read.
Our calling is not to convince people to worship, but to help them fall in love with the one we Worship. With that said something I was taught and embrace is we must have a love for the people we minister to before we can be effective in the realms of worship.
Jesus says our worship of the Father must be in spirit and truth. What did He mean? We can only worship if God has breathed life into our spirits. In that sense, worship is always a gift. It is the ability to recognize who God is and respond to Him rightly. Worship is not simply an external act, though the expression of it can and should be very physical, but comes from our center. Worship can be defined as our spirit surrendering to and communing with God’s Spirit. To worship in truth is to know who God truly is – in this context, as Father. We must come to God honestly as we are, not as we think He might want us to be, or based on how we want others to perceive us.
Worship is about willing surrender. The concept is to fall on your knees as to surrender to a conquering King, like the kissing of the feet of a conquering King. Our King conquered us by dying on a cross, so when we bow low to kiss His feet, it’s out of Love not duty.
King David my true hero set his heart to love the Lord by an act of his will, regardless of his life’s often-difficult situations. He chose to put a priority on his pursuit of God. And oh, how God liked that about David-even in spite of his faults and blatant sin.
His divine intention for all humanity is that we come to know Him and be known by Him through an encounter with His love. The primary source for this experience is worship-a worship that is out of genuine love and gratitude to God.
I can remember sitting in a training session with Pastor Tim Spirk and how he talked about worshipping God when you really do not want to because of things going on in your life, but once you can put those things aside and worship Him, these times can be the most rewarding times and the most intimate times spent with God. He was so right. Praising God in song is a perfect way to strip off the effects of depression. Isaiah 61:3 promises that the garment of praise we receive from the Lord replaces the spirit of heaviness. Next time you have a bad day, sing praise to God for a while until the gloom lifts! It works! Once your attention is shifted from the temporal realm to the eternal, your soul will start to stabilize. You’ll find that your mind gets clearer and you can think better.
Becoming true worshippers is the chief assignment God has given us in this lifetime. I believe that God is bringing the church to her knees to teach her how to express her love to Him in intimate, loving and adoring language. The Lord calls us to live a life of worship. The word, our walk with Christ and the works of the church as a whole are all expressions of worship. They necessarily flow out of hearts that are devoted to the Lord.
Worship is not about personality, temperament, personal limitations or church background-it’s about God. We are called to do it for His benefit, not ours. Yet the irony is that we do indeed benefit greatly when we give ourselves to worshipping God. We’ve been designed to worship.
God is calling people out to worship Him, He has been actively seeking worshippers since he created Adam and Eve. God knows that He is the greatest good in all eternity. Learning this truth and expressing it back to Him causes us to draw near to the source of all blessing.
As we discover and experience the majesty of God, the reality of His presence in our lives, and His availability to us in our times of need, we will be unable to keep from worshipping Him. It’s a natural response.
